The Toronto Indigenous Health Strategy, launched in 2016, laid the foundation for Toronto Public

Health to work towards addressing health inequities and improving health outcomes for urban Indigenous communities in the City of Toronto. Toronto Public Health is committed to expanding and strengthening our programs and services for the Indigenous population by working with and in relationship with Indigenous service providers and community members in the city.

Reporting to a member of the Toronto Public Health (TPH) senior management team, this position will work with Indigenous service providers and Indigenous community members on developing and implementing major policy initiatives aimed at advancing Indigenous population health and wellness.

The first twelve months of this position will include working directly with the Executive Director of the Toronto Aboriginal Social Services Council (TASSC) to co-develop an action plan focused on Indigenous wellness.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Post-secondary education in a professional discipline relevant to the job function and/or relevant experience or equivalent combination of education, experience, and understanding of the unique perspectives of Indigenous communities
  2. Considerable experience in policy planning and community development activities with Indigenous communities.
  3. Considerable experience in community engagement and relationship-building with Indigenous communities.
  4. Experience and solid knowledge of working in Toronto’s urban Indigenous community. Demonstrated relationships and connections to Indigenous social serving agencies is a considerable asset.
  5. Experience in writing comprehensive complex and formal reports.
  6. Experience in project management including project design, development and implementation
  7. Lived experience as an Indigenous person in Canada with in-depth knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety, as well as the history and present-day context of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities in Toronto and elsewhere is an asset.
  8. Highly developed verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to summarize information into clear and concise messages and prepare and deliver presentations, coupled with political acuity.
  9. Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to take initiative and problem solve.
  10. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  11. Ability to manage concurrent projects utilizing excellent organization and time management skills.
  12. Ability to support the Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity and respectful workplaces.
