Toronto and York Region Métis Community

TYRMC Committees

TYRMC is seeking volunteers to support the work of Council in running events and programs to bring us together and to celebrate our culture! We know that many of our citizens would like to contribute to the community- now is the time!

All levels of experience are welcome. If you have in-depth experience, great! Bring it along! If you are looking to gain some experience and connect with other community members, this is for you too!

Deadline: June 30th, 2026

Committees will be established after the deadline date and you should expect to hear from the onboarding team with more details after that.

How TYRMC Committees work

Committee volunteers will work with their Council lead to plan and support programming by holding committee meetings to identify priorities and to organize workshops and events in alignment with the TYRMC program calendar.

Committees prepare draft budgets, identify volunteer needs, and bring forward recommendations on programming and funding opportunities. Regular updates on activities and progress are shared at monthly Council meetings.

Committees support the work of Council in providing programming and events for citizens and in promoting Métis history and culture. Activity timing, details, and funding must be approved by Council.

TYRMC Committees

OUTREACH EVENTS (Council Leads: Amie Therrien & Chris Alder)

Leads in determining which community events Council will have a presence at and plans and implements that presence. Includes applying for and staffing vending and public education opportunities such as at local powwows, the Indigenous Legacy Gathering, and the Council Fire Summer Solstice and Youth Gathering events. Committee members will have the opportunity to represent TYRMC and Métis culture at these events and connect with other citizens and members of the public.

COMMUNITY GARDEN (Council Lead: Tanya La Rush)

Geared towards citizens who want to enjoy the TYRMC garden during the growing season and meet and connect with other citizens. Committee members are invited to volunteer as much or as little time as they can, both physically at the garden location in Allan Gardens or to help plan events and programming related to the garden such as guest speakers on invasive species in your home garden, how to grow medicines at home, the use behind each of the four medicines, the history behind the main vegetables that were grown in Metis homesteads, why having certain plants help the environment, or insects that help pollinate. As this newly created committee grows, new ideas may pop up that will be interesting or helpful to other citizens.

CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE (Council Leads: Paul Irvine, Darlee Gerrard)

Whether you’re a knowledge keeper or a knowledge seeker, take pride and embrace your Métis heritage. Join like-minded citizens as we formulate and develop Cultural Knowledge Committee goals and events. Short-term, long-term, or event specific, your involvement may include participating in the planning of TYRMC events and/or assisting TYRMC during the presentation of Cultural Knowledge Committee events. Events could include outdoor education activities and education as well as language, culture, and history related programming.

DECORATIVE ARTS (Council Lead: Atika Irvine-Tench)

Creates opportunities for our community to learn about, experience, and carry forward Métis cultural art forms. This includes hands-on learning in traditions such as Métis beadwork, quillwork, and textile arts like the Métis sash, helping ensure these practices continue to be shared and valued in the community. This committee plans workshops and events and connects with Métis knowledge holders to explore opportunities for knowledge sharing. This committee may also explore opportunities for citizens to share, showcase, and sell their creations.

GATHERING OF THE WISE OLDSTERS (Council & Region 8 Leads: Mary Anne Blore, Alicia Blore)

Lii Mamawapowuk dii Smaart Vyeu Moond (The Gathering of the Wise Oldsters) is a community-led drop-in bi-weekly program supporting Métis-identified individuals aged 55 and over in MNO Region 8.  The core of the program is “by Oldsters for Oldsters” focusing on  Métis traditions, identity, and well-being. It’s a friendly, social gathering of virtual and in-person activities.  The committee meets in the Fall to brainstorm ideas for the upcoming session, provides feedback when required, and helps at events. Join the committee and add your voice to shape the program for the upcoming season.
