Honour, Learn, & Act: National Indigenous History Month Celebration at George Brown Polytechnic Institute

On June 1, 2026, George Brown hosted an event to honour the first day of Indigenous History Month. It was a time to honour the strength, resilience, and vibrant cultures of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities through dance, speech, song and connection.

We were excited to have a TYRMC table, where we got to speak to people about Métis culture and hear their own stories. It was lovely to hear TYRMC President Amie Therrien give remarks and watch MNO Region 8 Manager Alicia Blore, MNO Culture & Way of Life Program Developer Megan Southwell and Teagan De Laronde, fiddle and jig, whilst explaining the history of how Metis people came to be, and the stories behind the jigs, including dancing with a broom – something that emerged during a time when public jigging was outlawed.

It was an honour to be in such an inclusive space, where people were eager to hear the stories and history of other Indigenous people present at the event. Miigwetch and Maarsii for having us, George Brown!
