Our Saturday, July 18th Summer Gathering was set to take place on Snake Island, on the Toronto Islands. But by Thursday, the Saturday forecast was calling for a 100% chance of rain and thunderstorms—we had to make a decision. Fortunately, we were able to move the event indoors to the Toronto Aboriginal Support Services Council (TASSC) Headquarters on Dundas St. East. Thank you TASSC! We demonstrated our resilient and adventurous Métis spirit, braving the storm to have a great time with our community.

In the comfort of the TASSC space we held our Métis Treasure Hunt (based on Voyageur caching) with the potted indoor plants and drapes serving as stand-ins for the Snake Island Forest and beach. Everyone enjoyed themselves with abundant amounts of food and drink thanks to our caterer, Hudson and his sous chef, Terry.

The TYRMC Summer Gathering featured storytelling by Virginia Barter and Kathy Morgan, along with dot art on musical spoons. In addition to Virginia and Kathy’s wonderful stories, we heard from citizens Olive, Oscar, Peter, Brenda and Jessica, along with President Amie and Senator Paul, as they each took turns on the mic to tell their stories—thanks to all for sharing!

By late afternoon, when the rain had cleared, 6 citizens went out to play the Disc Golf Challenge on a make-shift course in Regent Park.  Congratulations to Graham, the winner, with Leon and Peter taking 2nd and 3rd, respectively. They took home the medals. 

Though the day wasn’t quite what we had planned for Snake Island, we are happy to have had a wonderful time listening and learning from the shared stories, enjoying a meal together, participating in the spoon dot art and Disc Golf Challenge, and getting to meet new community members.

Reflecting on our Summer Gathering, we agree with Storyteller Virginia Barter who said, “Best moment of the day was when the young kids came forward to share their own stories and show pride in their culture.”
