On Saturday, August 9, 2025, the TYRMC participated in the 8th Annual Youth Gathering, a vibrant celebration of Indigenous culture, community, and youth leadership, held in the heart of Regent Park, Toronto. It’s a day to connect, learn, and celebrate together! Find more info here: https://www.councilfire.ca/8th-annual-youth-gathering/

We had kids and adults stepping into our tipi, which was gifted to us by Council Fire to be part of our presence at Indigenous cultural events. As it is painted with both the Métis flag and the colours of our Toronto sash, it provides a great opportunity to teach people about both. Learn more about our sash here: https://tyrmc.org/about-us/#sash. Many read the City of Toronto Apology to the Métis that sparked a lot of conversations with council. TYRMC Senator Paul Irvine, represented us as the flag bearer in the Grand Ceremony, carrying the Métis flag proudly.

We offered dot art painting, where kids (and adults!) could come learn the history of Métis dot art and how it relates to our beading traditions. Many kids loved feeling the similarity between the dried dot art and the beaded magnets we had (made by our own TYRMC President Amie Therrein).

Some great conversations took place at our booth, either by citizens sharing their stories or non-indigenous, who were interested in learning more about who the Métis people were.

Overall, it was a successful, wonderful day. Many left having learned something about us, or us about them. We represented with pride, enjoying the beautiful day; getting to observe the beautiful drumming and dancing. We can’t wait for next year! Hope you can join us!
