Every Child Matters Poem

October 3, 2022

The child was like a wild flower
They crushed her in a mill
Called Residential School.
They didn’t know,
When they crushed her so,
Her essence was a jewel.

The child was like a robin
Stolen from the nest
Stolen from under a mother’s wing.
They didn’t know,
When they stole his soul
That one day he would sing.

The child was like a seed,
They took her from her land,
And buried her in the ground.
They didn’t know,
That seeds will grow,
and branch out all around.

And though the schools were secret
And far from parents’ hearts,
They didn’t know
the truth would grow
And now we make new starts.
