TYRMC Voyageur Paddle 2025

On Sunday, August 10, 2025, almost 30 our our Métis citizens and their families gathered at Toronto harbourfront for the annual TYRMC Voyageur Paddle. Our voyage started with TYRMC Senator Paul Irvine providing a welcoming prayer.

We then took off on our voyage through the great and powerful Lake Ontario. Next stop: Toronto Islands!

Once tucked away from the wind, we had some time to look for wildlife on the shores. A Great Blue Heron and Great Blue Egret were spotted, to name a few! Before pulling onto the shore of Centre Island, we had a canoe race! The canoe holding our flag won. Did they have some type of trick up their sleeve? We’ll never know.

We got to learn about Doughnut Island, a small island shaped like a doughnut with water in the middle. It has a history of being used as a landfill, but it is now known for its many bird species – even a popular spot for birdwatching! We also got to practice our paddling and working as a team. It was a hot day, so we welcomed the splashes that came our way!

Before heading back, we had a little stop at the island, where we fuelled ourselves for the paddle back with snacks, sat by the water and saw people enjoying their day at the island.

Overall, it was a splendid day, ending with mingling with new friends over a pizza party. Marsi to everyone who came out to join us and to our council for their hard work to put it together! See you next year!
